Program Description
This exchange program focuses on intensive English language learning, from basic to advanced levels, both theoretically and practically, at Universiti Sains Malaysia in Penang, Malaysia, for a duration of 2 weeks. The program offers Indonesian youth the opportunity to practice English and experience life abroad to learn about new cultures and lifestyles. Participants will engage in cultural exchange with people from various countries, broadening their perspectives and developing a forward-thinking vision. Selected participants will enjoy several privileges, including experiencing life as a USM student and visiting famous attractions in Penang.

Universiti Sains Malaysia, or USM, is a public university in Malaysia established in 1969. It has three campuses: the main one in Penang, another in Kelantan focusing on health sciences, and Nibong Tebal specializing in engineering. With over 30,000 students, USM was originally named "Universiti Pulau Pinang." Furthermore, it is the second oldest university in Malaysia and is renowned for its expertise in pure and applied sciences, pharmacy, and research in educational, social, and human sciences.
On November 19, 2008, CLT was upgraded to the School of Languages, Literacies, and Translation. It then began offering undergraduate programs in various language disciplines. The first program introduced was the Bachelor of Arts in English for Professional Communication. Graduates of this program not only gain proficiency in English but also acquire the skills necessary for excellence in both local and global work environments. Currently, the school offers a wide range of foreign language programs, including Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, German, Korean,French, Spanish, Tamil, Russian, and Thai. These programs are available as both core and elective courses, providing students with ample opportunities to learn new languages and enhance their career prospects. The School of Languages, Literacies, and Translation has achieved its goals with the support of dedicated and high-quality staff, a conducive learning environment, effective teaching and research practices, and state-of-the-art language facilities.
School of Languages, Literacies and Translation
Founded in 1972, the School of Languages, Literacies, and Translation initially started as a language course under the School of Education. In 1985, it was elevated to the Centre for Languages and Translation (CLT). At that time, Malay was used as the medium of instruction, and English became a mandatory subject for all undergraduate students, which significantly increased CLT’s prominence andimportance.
OISC has a grade one inspection report of the Independent Schools Inspectorate, which is an approved educational oversight body authorized by the UKVI. OISC is also an accredited member of COBIS (the Council for British International Schools), a member of the European Council of International Schools, the European Association for International Education and of the Swiss Group of International Schools. The principal is a member of the Independent Educational Consultants and of the Society of Educational Consultants.
Criteria
- Age between 14-25 years old
- Students or youth seeking to learn English from a basic level
- Good health and a positive attitude towards change and learning about diverse cultures
- Responsible, adaptable, and eager to learn new things
- Not previously awarded a scholarship from the Malaysian government

Conditions and Terms for Participation
- Participants must have a passport valid for at least six months. If not, they must obtain one immediately upon acceptance.
- As a short-term program, the university will only handle in-office medical issues. Participants are strongly advised to have travel insurance.
- Participants must adhere strictly to program rules. Non-compliance or causingharm to the program may result in immediate disqualification.

- Write an essay on the topic “Tips for Overcoming the Fear of Using English” in English, and attach it to the application.
- Use Microsoft Word for writing.
- More than 300 words but less than 600 words.
- Use Times New Roman font size 14.
- Save the file as a .pdf and attach it to the application.

Selection Process and Result Dates

- Confirmation of Participation: 16 - 21 September 2024.
Participation Fee
- Participants who are selected will be obligated to pay 860 USD, which covers all listed items.

- Pay the participation fee of 2,400 USD.
What is Covered in the Program
- Accommodation at Century Bay Private Residences (includes air conditioning, en-suite bathroom, hot water, swimming pool, washing machine, gym, café, etc.)
- Rapid Penang bus pass and USM bus pass for travel within the university and Penang city.
- USM student ID card (provides benefits such as free clinic services, libraryaccess, and various discounts).
- Meals (only during the opening and closing ceremonies; other meals start at Rp. 10.000 per meal).
- Language course, proficiency tests, and sightseeing in Penang.
- Round-trip transportation from Soekarno Hatta Airport to USM.
- Certificate from USM upon completion of the program.
